📖 What is Hindi OCR?

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is technology that reads text in images and converts it into editable digital text. Hindi OCR specifically recognises Devanagari script — used for Hindi, Marathi, Sanskrit, and Nepali.

This tool uses Tesseract.js — Google's open-source OCR engine compiled to WebAssembly — so it runs entirely inside your browser. Your images are never sent to any server, making it completely safe for sensitive documents.

Hindi OCR is ideal for digitising printed Hindi books, newspaper cuttings, scanned government documents, certificates, letters, invoices, and any physical document containing Hindi or Devanagari text.

Once extracted, the text can be edited in Word, translated, searched, pasted into WhatsApp, or used for further analysis — making your physical Hindi documents truly digital.

🌐 Supported Indian Languages

Powered by Tesseract trained data models for 14 Indian languages + English.

Sanskrit English

💡 Combine languages for best results — e.g. "Hindi + English" for government forms, textbooks & invoices.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool completely free?

+
Yes, completely free and unlimited. The OCR engine (Tesseract) runs inside your browser so there are no server costs and therefore no usage limits.

Are my images uploaded to any server?

+
No. Your images never leave your device. All processing happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly technology. We cannot see your documents.

Which Indian languages are supported?

+
Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Odia, Sanskrit, and English — and mixed combinations.

Can it read handwritten Hindi?

+
Handwriting recognition (especially Devanagari) is an active research area. This tool works best for printed text. Very neat handwriting may partially work.

Why does it take a moment to start?

+
On first use, the tool downloads the Tesseract language data files (Hindi ~15MB, English ~5MB). This is cached in your browser for all future uses on this device.

How do I improve accuracy?

+
Use high-resolution (300 DPI+) scans, ensure good contrast, keep text straight, and select the correct language. Cropping to just the text region also helps.

What image formats are accepted?

+
PNG, JPG/JPEG, WEBP, BMP, GIF, and TIFF are all supported. You can also paste images from your clipboard using Ctrl+V. Maximum file size is 20 MB.

Can I convert a scanned Hindi PDF to text?

+
Yes, but first convert the PDF page to an image — take a screenshot, use a PDF-to-image converter, or photograph the printed page. Then upload that image here.

Does this tool work on mobile phones?

+
Yes, it works on Android and iOS in Chrome, Safari, and Firefox mobile browsers. You can use your phone camera to photograph a Hindi document and upload it directly.

Can I download the extracted text as a Word document?

+
Yes. After extraction, click Download .doc to save as a Microsoft Word-compatible document, or Download .txt for a plain text file. You can also click Copy to paste the text anywhere.
